Kicking Off Read Across America Week

This morning we combined Math and Reading for an exciting activity.  After our Math lesson on counting coins, we designed some Dr. Seuss wallets.  Then we stationed 8 Dr. Seuss readers around the room with piles of coins.  Every five minutes, students visited a different reader and earned a coin for listening to that story.  We saved the coins in our wallets.  There were 8 stories to choose from and each student chose 6.  That meant that all of our wallets had different values at the end of the activity.
Jack and Anthony show off their Seuss wallets.
Here were the stories we had to choose from.
Kiana and John gave out pennies for listening to their books.
Justin and Lindsey gave out nickels for these Seuss classics!

Listening to Brianna or Jack earned you a dime!

Here's a quarter for reading Sara and Sinquan's book

For example, when we were done, Dylan's wallet had 2 quarters, 4 dimes, and 2 nickels. He counted those mixed coins and knew he had earned eaxctly a dollar!
Ryley chose books that added up to 61 cents.
It was great practice in adding mixed coins!

When we were finished the students voted on their favorite Dr. Suess titles. The results are below.
Green Eggs and Ham with Sara took the top spot on our class bar graph.
