Suffixes

Useful or useless?
When you look at these inventions, which word would you use to describe them?
Soup Fan
Snowball Maker

No-Touch Sink Faucet

After a motivating discussion where we all defended these inventions as useful or useless, I asked the students to dissect those two words.  That's when we found the base word use and two different word endings called suffixes.
We brainstormed other words with the -ful suffix and learned the definition means "full of ________."  Then we made a list of words with- less as a suffix which means "without ______."

Our student centered activity took us to three different kingdoms where all the subjects were base words and the prince or princess was a suffix.  After our partners discovered which kingdom they belonged to, the groups were asked to write a silly story using all the words they made up.

My favorite part was watching the base words hope, carepain, and help decide which kingdom they belonged to.  Technically, they were allowed to reside in more than one kingdom.

The kingdom of -ful

The kingdom of -less

The prince has lost his crown

The kingdom of -ly

The princess of -ful greets her royal subjects

The princess of -ly holds court
