Band-Aid Writing

Write about a time when you or someone you know got hurt. Tell the events that happened and how you and others reacted.  This personal narrative prompt was our focus for Writer's Workshop today with an emphasis on past-tense verbs within these writing samples.
After completing the writing portion of our lesson, each student was given art paper and three band-aids to use as props in their story illustration.  The writing itself was outstanding, but seeing the band-aid illustrations of these personal narratives really shows what great writers the Cavileers are becoming!

New Year's Resolutions

A resolution is a promise to change or improve something about yourself in the new year.  Our class shared different goals that we had for ourselves in 2012 and wrote our plans to keep these resolutions in the new year.  They are hanging in our classroom as a January reminder of all the great things we hope to accomplish in 2012!  Good luck with your goals everyone!

A Busy Year of Writing

Our latest writer's workshop piece was modeled off of Leo Lionni's A Busy year. (Thanks to Mrs. Grdic for sharing the book.) Each student chose something from their lives that changes through the seasons, just like the tree in Lionni's story.  In the end, each student had 4 illustrated pages of their object shown at 4 different times of the year.  Much like this:

This assignment was originally intended to introduce the writing trait ORGANIZATION.  Each student chose a different season to be their page ONE and then proceeded through the year from there.  However, once we began writing our great IDEAS, students found their VOICE and improved their CONVENTIONS throughout the process.
They will be shared with the class on Friday morning using our secret weapon, Cammy.  (Yeah, our document camera has a name.)

Pumpkin Glyph Writers

Use this Pumpkin glyph to be a Halloween detective!  The students wrote a main idea and detail-filled Pumpkin fact paragraph and it is now hanging next to a unique Jack-o-Lantern pumpkin glyph that matches each student's answers to the glyph questions.
